The vast majority of PS5 players choose performance mode over quality, according to gamers on Reddit.
While this feature is no stranger to gamers with high-end PC’s with their snazzy ultra settings, it’s still something relatively new on consoles.
The choice of having either a performance or quality mode perhaps rose in popularity during the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X era. Though, it’s certainly a more prominent and welcomed feature of this modern generation. Most major releases on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will at least offer the two modes, while some may offer a few more options, especially those with VRR/120Hz compatible TVs.
I’m not one to always favour one over the other, as I take it game-by-game. That being said, I probably lean slightly towards performance mode, as I had done during my Street Fighter 6 review and as reported by TheGamer, it seems that most other players are of a similar mindset. However, if the ray tracing implementation blows me away, then I may favour eye candy.
Players on Reddit have been discovering which modes they favour when gaming on PlayStation 5.
“Do you use performance mode or quality mode more?” asked Redditor maverick074. “Personally I always use performance mode. I always notice 60 FPS way more than I notice ray tracing.”
“Performance. Graphics are so good now that games look great even in perf mode,” said TyperMcTyperson. “60fps anytime,” replied alfmrf.
“FPS all day long,” responded bad_piggie. “I do care about graphics but not enough to ignore the jerkiness that is 30fps. Once you’ve gone 60fps there’s no going back.” KingChaggs adds: “Always performance. Smoother gameplay is more important to me than graphics.”
Hopefully as the expected imminent arrival of the PlayStation 5 Pro draws near, not to mention as we dawn into a new era, hopefully, console gamers can live in a world where having both 60fps to 120fps, as well as ray-tracing implemented is a viable option with no compromise. We can all but dream.
