Final Fantasy Becomes One of the Most Successful Game Series
Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise began in 1987 with the release of the first game and since then, 15 mainline entries in the series have been dropped globally. Along with complex stories that feature role-playing elements, many of the titles include popular gameplay mechanics like racing, turned-based combat and avatar customization. Over 173 million copies of the various games have been sold worldwide, meaning Final Fantasy stands alongside Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda and Assassin’s Creed as one of the most successful video game franchises ever.
Directed by Motomu Toriyama and produced by Yoshinori Kitase, Final Fantasy XIII dropped for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009 and became playable on PC in 2014. The plot sees Lightning, a former soldier, and her comrades battle against the evil government Sanctum that has begun purging citizens. While the title did receive some criticism for the linearity of the story, particularly in its early chapters, Final Fantasy XIII generally performed well with both critics and players.
It received two sequels: Final Fantasy XIII-2, released in 2011, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, launched in 2013. The latter takes place five hundred years after the conclusion of the original Final Fantasy XIII and sees Lightning return 13 days before an apocalypse to save the dying world. Lightning Returns and its version of the titular character appear to be the inspiration for Taiyo Lux’s cosplay.
The latest mainline title in the franchise, Final Fantasy XVI, is scheduled for worldwide release on June 22 exclusively for the PlayStation 5. The new game will feature open-world environments and an action-based combat system in a magical world known as Valisthea, which is split between six nations. It will follow protagonist Clive Rosfield, the firstborn son of one of the ruling families, who is on a path of vengeance.
Video games within the Final Fantasy franchise are playable on a variety of platforms, including PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
