The rumored GoldenEye 007 remaster was a no-show at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, surprising and letting down some fans of the classic shooter.
A remastered version of GoldenEye 007 was expected to make an appearance at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, but it was nowhere to be seen. Rumors about a remaster of the classic shooter have been circulating all year, causing some fans to be surprised and let down when they weren’t confirmed. This could be an indirect debunking of those rumors, or it could mean that GoldenEye‘s reveal is being held back for another occasion.
At the beginning of the year, a full list of Xbox achievements for GoldenEye 007 was leaked online, leading many to believe that a new version of the game was in development. The iconic, beloved status that GoldenEye 007 holds in the eyes of many players has long left them clamoring for a remaster or remake, so the leaked achievements and subsequent rumors quickly gained traction. As months passed without any official acknowledgments of the rumors, fans of the franchise waited with bated breath for any further news. Xbox’s recent showcase could have been a great opportunity to make such an announcement, so the game’s absence has come as a disappointment to some.
The simplest explanation for the lack of news about a GoldenEye 007 remaster is that there isn’t actually one currently in development. Although GoldenEye 007‘s trademark was recently updated, that could just be a way for Xbox to keep that option on the cards, rather than an indication of actual development taking place. However, there are many reasons why Xbox could be concealing such a remaster even now, so those still holding out hope for a GoldenEye revival might yet receive good news.
A GoldenEye Remake For Xbox Might Still Be In Development
The Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase was packed with high-profile titles, with a heavy emphasis on Bethesda’s upcoming space RPG, Starfield. With that in mind, it could be the case that Xbox has held off on a GoldenEye announcement so that it wouldn’t be overshadowed by other hotly anticipated titles. In addition, the games presented at the showcase are all coming to Game Pass, which was clearly a theme of the event. Since the original game was published by Nintendo, a remaster would likely be a more complex situation, and could be kept off Game Pass, causing it to clash with the rest of the showcase’s content. There is precedent for this kind of complication, with a previous Xbox remaster of GoldenEye 007 canceled due to complicated relations between Xbox and Nintendo. Since that remaster was supposedly only months away from completion before being canceled, it would make sense for Microsoft to be keeping a new one under wraps until such things are sorted out completely. It is also worth noting, however, that a remake of GoldenEye did make its way to the Xbox 360 in 2011, called GoldenEye 007: Reloaded.
Even without any complications, a theoretical remaster could also simply not far enough along in its development for Xbox to show anything. Of course, plenty of games have been announced without such detail in the past, but revealing a remaster’s existence with updated footage would arguably make a bigger splash than just a simple teaser. In any case, keeping expectations tempered is smart. Xbox’s Perfect Dark reboot is reportedly years from release due to problems at The Initiative, and there’s no reason to say similar issues couldn’t also befall a hypothetical GoldenEye revamp either. If there is indeed a GoldenEye 007 remaster in the works, fans should follow the lead of Xbox, and patiently cross their fingers.
