SEGA has revealed plans to release several remakes, remasters and new games over the course of the 2023 financial year ending in March 2023.
SEGA revealed its plans to launch many more titles in the coming year, including remakes, remasters and brand new games.
During a presentation of its results for its fiscal year ending in March 2022, SEGA reported strong sales of console and PC games and increased profits over last year. As pointed out by VGC, it also predicted higher numbers for the new fiscal year, citing a “significant increase in titles” and growing revenue from the “large number of new titles” released during FY2022. Part of these numbers include what it described as “remake / remaster, spin-off [or] change of theme,” with the company “planning multiple titles” for these.
SEGA sold approximately 4 million games in the last year that fell in this category, including Sonic Colours Ultimate, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania and Lost Judgment, a spin-off of Yakuza. The developer predicted it will sell 5 million games during the FY2023 period. Part of the reason for its high expectations is the upcoming release of Sonic Origins, a remaster of the early games in the series for current-gen platforms. In Sonic Origins, gamers can play as either Sonic, Tails or Knuckles in remastered versions of iconic levels from the series, including Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant Zone. Players can switch between Classic and Anniversary Modes during missions as they try to defeat Dr. Eggman. The games include new remastered visuals, characters, game modes, game zones and more.
Known SEGA reboots include Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. began developing the two games as part of SEGA’s “Super Game” initiative. Over a year ago, the company announced the creation of the initiative as part of its mission to develop games from which they can form recurring revenue sources and build communities online for its software. Last year, both games appeared on SEGA’s annual report as part of a group of intellectual assets that SEGA wanted to bring up to date to recapitalize them. Since they are currently in early production, there is still a possibility they could be canceled at this stage.
Sonic Origins will be released on June 23, 2022, for PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, the Nintendo Switch™ family of systems and PC. The game is currently available to pre-order on Origin. The digital standard edition costs $39.99, the digital deluxe is $44.99 and the Premium & Classic Sound Pack is $3.99. There is currently no word yet on when Crazy Taxi or Jet Set Radio might launch, but some predictions place them in the 2024-2025 range.
