  • Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Is CDPR’s Costliest DLC to Date

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red reveals that the Phantom Liberty DLC has one of the biggest budgets allocated in the studio’s history.

The recently announced Cyberpunk 2077 DLC Phantom Liberty is shaping up to be developer CD Projekt Red’s most expensive.

As reported by Eurogamer, CDPR has confirmed that Phantom Liberty‘s budget will be the largest in the studio’s history. Initially, there was some confusion on whether comments made by the CDPR team referred to the size of the budget or the amount of content. However, it was later clarified by Community Director Marcin Morton on Reddit. On a Reddit post describing the DLC as CD Projekt Red’s “biggest,” Morton clarified, “Just wanted to point out that this part is about the biggest budget when it comes to expansion packs we’ve released.”

Cyberpunk 2077‘s first and so far only DLC was announced at The Game Awards 2022. The world premiere trailer showed Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand narrating a dismal situation before being told about a new arrival who might be able to make a difference. This person is Solomon Reed, an FIA Agent of the New United States of America government. Reed is portrayed by Idris Elba, and he will help the player navigate a secretive plot surrounding NUSA and Militech. Little is known about the specifics of the add-on content, but it will incorporate new weapons, cyberware and areas of the Night City district.

The announcement and teaser trailer came shortly after it was confirmed that any plans for adding an online multiplayer mode were canceled. The developer’s lead quest designer and narrative director Phillip Weber confirmed the news in an interview with Eurogamer. They stated, “[Fixing Cyberpunk 2077 after launch] meant that other R&D projects had to go away.” Weber later elaborated that the team adjusted their approach to adding online elements for any future projects. They finished with, “We don’t want to go overboard or lose our single-player DNA. We want to take thoughtful steps to build robust online capabilities.”

What Is Cyberpunk 2077?

Set in a dystopian America in 2077, the metropolis of Night City is a chaotic free-for-all between greedy corporations, rampant gangs and militant groups. The player takes on the role of V, a mercenary who’s trying to make a fresh start in Night City. As the game progresses, V can customize their playstyle through class choices, weapons and cyberware implants that grant unique abilities.

Gamers can step into the futuristic wasteland of Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Windows.
