Koei Tecmo shows off an exclusive bonus Dead Or Alive-inspired costume for early purchasers of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.
Koei Tecmo has teased some bonus content taking the form of an alternate costume for the upcoming Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. The title initially released exclusively on the Japanese market for the Nintendo Wii in 2008 to a generally favorable reception among fans and critics.
Alternate costumes are something of a series staple in Fatal Frame, sometimes drawing inspiration from Koei Tecmo’s other franchises, as well as other games in the series proper. For example, as an early purchase bonus, those who picked up Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water before November 11, 2021, were eligible to receive a costume inspired by the company’s popular Atelier series.
This time, a costume inspired by Marie Rose of Dead or Alive 5 is up for grabs as an early purchase bonus for Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, which is releasing worldwide on March 9, 2023. According to the official website, the costume will be available for two weeks after Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse release but may become available for purchase at a later date.
There are several other bonus costumes available. Those who pre-order Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will receive the unrevealed Fox Mask costume set, while those who have save data from Maiden of the Black Water are eligible for the silly Camera Obscura Hat. Those opting for the Digital Deluxe Edition will get a handful of costumes and accessories, as well as the digital art book and original soundtrack.
Fatal Frame is a well-respected franchise in the horror gaming community but suffered from relatively poor sales in recent history thanks to the most recent games, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and Maiden of the Black Water, only being released on the Wii and Wii U, respectively. Unlike Maiden of the Black Water, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was never localized for international audiences until now despite being released on one of the most popular game consoles of all time.
Fans of the Fatal Frame series will no doubt be eager to snap this title up in hopes that it paves the way for future entries into the series, as the once Japan-exclusive Mask of the Lunar Eclipse comes to Western audiences for the first time. Perhaps the Marie Rose-inspired costume will give the scaredy cats and Dead or Alive faithful the courage to wield the Camera Obscura by channeling the character’s fighting spirit. Hopefully, with the multiplatform release, Fatal Frame will benefit from a wider audience than ever.
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse launches on March 9, 2023, for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
