Is Rise Of The Ronin Coming To Xbox?

One of the biggest and most exciting announcements from September 2022’s State Of Play from Sony was Rise of the Ronin for PS5, a new action RPG from Team Ninja, the creators of games like Nioh and Ninja Gaiden. Despite the fact that the game is only scheduled to be released in 2024, Rise of the Ronin already appears to be highly anticipated, so much so that Xbox players will be wondering if they’ll get a slice of the action.

Unfortunately, Rise of the Ronin doesn’t appear to be heading to the Xbox Series X & S or Xbox One at all. During the State of Play showcase, Rise of the Ronin was announced as a PS5 console exclusive instead of a timed console exclusive, which would suggest that the game is never making its way over to Microsoft’s platform.

On top of that, news has come since the unveiling of Rise of the Ronin that reveals Sony have been pitching in with the game’s development. Sony has an internal development team by the name of XDev, who have been responsible in the past for helping with the development of PlayStation games from external studios. In the past, the Liverpool-based XDev team has aided with the creation of games like LittleBigPlanet 1-3, Heavy Rain, Returnal and more.

Traditionally, Sony Japan would handle the same responsibilities for games developed by third party studios in Japan, but with Sony Japan’s closure, it appears that an XDev Japan team is aiding Team Ninja in the development of Rise of the Ronin. Senior XDev producer Jason Stewart has tweeted out that he’s teaming with Team Ninja regarding Rise of the Ronin, working in Japan to do so.

Privileged to work on an exciting title as #RiseOfTheRonin with Yasuda-san of @TeamNINJAStudio @giwamasa and our @Sony_XDEV JP team. Only right to visit the Meiji Jingu Shrine. Granted, this isn’t a hard confirmation that Rise of the Ronin is never coming to the Xbox, because Sony have published games on the Xbox in the past. Specifically one game, in fact: MLB The Show. However, while we do live in a world where Sony can publish and release games on the Xbox, MLB: The Show is a licensed sports game, and reports suggest that MLB themselves were integral in that decision.

Seeing a new IP like Rise of the Ronin being moved over to the Xbox is another story entirely. With Xbox’s rapid and aggressive expansion into Japan recently, securing titles like Persona, Like A Dragon and Danganronpa, seeing Rise of the Ronin on Xbox definitely isn’t impossible. Still, as Sony are aiding Team Ninja in Rise of the Ronin’s development, it’ll be a very long time after 2024 before it’s even a possibility.

About Rise of the Ronin

Rise of the Ronin is a new single-player action RPG from Team Ninja, the minds behind Nioh and Ninja Gaiden.

In the making for seven years, Rise of the Ronin takes place in 18th century Japan during the Edo Period, one of the country’s most infamous era. With Japan under oppressive rule and ravaged by disease, you play as a ronin who’s experiencing “the most critical revolution in the history of Japan including the darkest and ugliest chapters that many will shy away from”.

Calling to mind classics like Way of the Samurai as well as Sony’s own Ghost of Tsushima, Rise of the Ronin is slated to release in 2024 for PS5.
