During the Dragon’s Dogma 10-year celebration, Hideaki Itsuno officially announced that a sequel, Dragon’s Dogma 2, is currently in development.
During the Dragon’s Dogma 10-year celebration, the game’s director Hideaki Itsuno officially announced that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is currently in development, leaving fans wondering if the upcoming title would be a sequel or a prequel. Although the announcement only teased a logo, Capcom appeared to confirm on social media that Dragon’s Dogma 2 would indeed be a sequel, while also confirming that it is being built on RE Engine.
When Hideaki Itsuno first pitched Dragon’s Dogma, Capcom had never released an open-world title, resulting in skepticism towards the project. The open-world fantasy role-playing game began development in 2008, releasing in 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Five years later, Capcom released Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, an updated version of the game for its original platforms. Since then, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen has been ported to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and a Dragon’s Dogma Netflix original anime adaptation, set in Itsuno’s fantasy world of Gransys, was released on the streaming service in 2020.
On the same day as the 10 Years of Dragon’s Dogma broadcast, which concluded with the announcement of Dragon’s Dogma 2, a tweet from the official Dragon’s Dogma Twitter account appeared to confirm that the upcoming game is indeed a sequel and not a prequel. The tweet, which shared a link to a Capcom press release containing the news revealed in the broadcast, describes Dragon’s Dogma 2 as “the upcoming sequel,” which should put to bed speculation that the series could follow Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption in titling a prequel as a sequel. The tweet also confirmed that the upcoming Dragon’s Dogma 2 will use RE Engine.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Is A Sequel To 2012’s Dragon’s Dogma
The tweet and press release for the announcement of Dragon’s Dogma 2 both feature the tagline “begin the cycle anew“, suggesting the sequel will be an entirely new chapter, rather than a remake or prequel. As the enhanced version of Dragon’s Dogma was developed for the now-outdated PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the upcoming sequel promises to deliver a graphically updated look at the dark fantasy world of Gransys. The newest console that Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen has been optimized for is the Nintendo Switch, with critics and audiences praising the quality of the port to the Nintendo console. As other games built on Capcom’s RE Engine, like Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, have been ported to the latest PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X consoles, fans are hopeful Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be too.

Dragon’s Dogma fans eagerly await further updates regarding Dragon’s Dogma 2, especially the first look at the game’s graphics and gameplay, as well as any clues indicating its release date. It may be worth playing the first Dragon’s Dogma before Dragon’s Dogma 2 due to the extremely long decade gap between titles, and with very little revealed aside from the sequel’s title so far, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Capcom title won’t be released for some time. 2012’s Dragon’s Dogma wasn’t released until four years after its initial announcement, but hopefully, fans won’t be waiting until 2026 for the long-awaited Dragon’s Dogma sequel.
