GTA V and Red Dead 2 dominate Christmas Charts on Xbox

Rockstar Games’ titles might be several years old now but they continue to be some of the best selling and most played games ahead of Christmas. Xbox’s official charts reveal how well Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption II as well as their online components are doing. Let’s take a look at where they are placing in the week of Christmas.

Most played game chart

At the time of writing, December 20th 2022, GTA 5 is the 5th most played game on Xbox. Despite not topping the charts, more recent games are ahead of it so this is no feat to scoff at. Fortnite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Rocket League and High On Life take the first four spots. Both Fortnite and Rocket League are free to play so that is something to keep in mind given Grand Theft Auto V costs money. It was in 4th place last week. The standalone Xbox Series X|S version of GTA Online is in 14th place. Meanwhile the western blockbuster that is Red Dead Redemption 2 is in 19th place which is good to see.

Best selling chart

The actual sales chart tells a similar but rather interesting story. The 6th best selling game on Xbox at the time of reading is the GTA V Premium Edition and Great White Shark Cark bundle. This is behind FIFA 23, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Cyberpunk 2077.

The GTA V Premium Edition comes in at 7th place. GTA IV is 12th place which is quite an achievement for a game that released in 2008. In 17th place is the GTA V Premium Edition and Whale Shark Cark bundle.

Red Dead 2’s Ultimate Edition comes in at 29th place whereas Red Dead Redemption is in 33rd place. Curiously the Xbox Series X|S version of GTA Online is 35th place and Red Dead Online is 39th.

You will also find the GTA V Premium Edition and Megalodon Shark Cark bundle in 37th place. The standard edition of Red Dead 2 is in 5th position. This chart shows most players are purchasing the Xbox One version of the game but with the Premium Edition and a Shark Card bundle.

You will also find plenty of these versions of Red Dead 2 and GTA V have hefty discounts helping propel them up the charts ahead of new releases. It is also worth noting that a new generation of players will be getting consoles at Christmas and parents could be buying these games for them ahead of time. Another observation made from scrolling through this chart is that the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is nowhere to be seen.
