What are the best PS4 RPGs? Well, the PlayStation 4 is home to a vast library role-playing games. From MMOs and open world epics to niche Japanese RPGs (or JRPGs) and traditional adventures stuffed with text, there’s something for just about everyone. It’s an expansive genre in which East meets West, and we see numerous takes a similar formula. As with anything, though, some titles are better than others, and so we’ve put together what we think are the best RPGs on PS4.
And, if you’re looking for even more RPG recommendations, be sure to check out our Best RPGs on PS5 guide, as well as our Best RPGs on PS Plus guide.
Below is an unordered list of the best PS4 RPGs. Whether it’s JRPGs or open world WRPGs, these are our favourites on Sony’s console.
Bloodborne (PS4)
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: FromSoftware
Average Length: 40 hours
Combat System: Action
Bloodborne’s twisted take on the Cthulhu tales is guaranteed to go down as one of the most iconic outings of the PS4 generation, pitching perfect combat against a sprawling gothic backdrop. The cobbled streets of Yharnam are a character unto themselves, as Victorian districts fold and overlap, and provide the framework for some of the best battles you’ll find on any format. A tour-de-force in both art direction and game design, this is one of Sony’s most exciting new series.

The Outer Worlds
Publisher: Private Division / Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Average Length: 30 hours
Combat System: First-person shooting / action
The Outer Worlds is a masterclass in role-playing game design. Veteran studio Obsidian has delivered a fantastic sci-fi adventure that channels both Fallout: New Vegas and Mass Effect with an even heavier emphasis on player choice. Brilliantly witty writing, great characters, and and punchy combat combine to make this a memorable journey across the seemingly doomed space colony of Halcyon. If you’re looking for pure role-playing excellence, few games on this list can stand alongside The Outer Worlds.
Final Fantasy XV
Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: Square Enix
Average Length: 50 hours
Combat System: Action
Final Fantasy XV has proven to be somewhat divisive, but it’s a unique title that carves out its own path through the current RPG landscape. Built upon the idea of a bro-tastic road trip, its premise makes for a thoroughly enjoyable journey, even if it does squander its opportunity to tell a more engaging story. It’s stuffed with secrets and strangeness, and its mix of realism and fantasy really sets it apart from most of the other games on this list. It’s not quite a classic, but it’s still a damn good time.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks / Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
Average Length: 50 hours
Combat System: Action
Originally a technical mess on PS3, Skyrim returns to the PlayStation Nation with the remastered and reworked Special Edition on PS4. Featuring mod support and all of the original game’s downloadable content, this is the definitive way to experience one of Bethesda’s best titles on a Sony system. Incredibly detailed and memorable, the land of Skyrim is still right up there with the greatest open worlds that video games have to offer. Bugs and minor performance issues are the only things holding this re-release back. Other than that, it’s a timeless adventure.
Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir
Publisher: Atlus / Developer: Vanillaware
Average Length: 30 hours
Combat System: 2D action
Beautiful to behold, Odin Sphere: Lefithrasir is a top notch action RPG. It’s bursting at the seams with character, and its wonderfully told story is pulled straight from a bedtime book – except most books have never looked this good. Slick controls, some brilliant boss fights, and a luscious world ensure that this overlooked remake sits near the top of the pile when it comes to PS4 RPGs.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Publisher: Ubisoft / Developer: Ubisoft
Average Length: 70 hours
Combat System: Action
Doubling down on the RPG elements that were introduced in Assassin’s Creed Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a more involved open world adventure thanks to things like branching dialogue options and lots of lovely loot. The combat system is also refined, a more in-depth skill tree lets you fully customise your play style, and a range of mythical boss battles keep things spicy. One of Ubisoft’s finest.
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom
Average Length: 40 hours
Combat System: Action
One of the very best action RPGs of modern times, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is better than ever on PS4, where its last-gen framerate issues are put to the sword. Subtle storytelling combines with a dark fantasy world to create an enthralling experience, and the combat is still miles ahead of almost everything else in the genre. A game deserving of far more praise than many are prepared to give.
Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition
Publisher: Bandai Namco / Developer: Larian Studios
Average Length: 70 hours
Combat System: Turn based
Refining the tone of its writing and delivering a much better paced story, Divinity: Original Sin II is a huge improvement on an already great role-playing experience. Character creation is meaningfully in-depth, and every action throughout your adventure further defines your hero. As far as player choice goes, Larian’s sequel is one of the very best titles on PS4, and the many paths that you can take make it a brilliantly replayable package.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Publisher: SEGA / Developer: Yakuza Studio
Average Length: 50 hours
Combat System: Turn based
A completely different approach in terms of gameplay, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a turn based RPG that takes heavy inspiration from the likes of Dragon Quest. For the first time in SEGA’s main series, Kazuma Kiryu is stripped of his duties as a protagonist, replaced by the supremely endearing Ichiban Kasuga and his party of crazy characters. While the adventure still has story ties to previous entries, Like a Dragon is something of a rebirth — and it’s fantastic fun.
Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – Ultimate Evil Edition (PS4)
Publisher: Blizzard / Developer: Blizzard
Average Length: 30 hours
Combat System: Isometric action
When it comes to endless character progression and loot, nothing measures up to Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – Ultimate Evil Edition. An action RPG that offers what is in theory an infinite amount of stuff to do, it’s a blast whether you’re playing with friends or you’re grinding through the demon hordes all on your own. Supremely polished and intuitive, it’s hands down one of the tightest titles on PS4.
